Minimum Wage Campaign Begins
Friday, October 25, 2013
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The
push to increase minimum wages across metro Washington began last night.
Metro Council president Jos Williams, Progressive Maryland and the Restaurant
Opportunities Center testified at a hearing by the Montgomery County Council
Committee on Health and Human Services in favor of increasing the minimum wage
for workers in Montgomery County. The hearing was “the first step toward
improving the lives of working families throughout the region by increasing the
minimum wage, including tipped workers and paid sick days,” Williams said.
Bills are also pending in Prince George’s County and the District of Columbia
and the activists plan to push for a statewide increase in Maryland as well.
“Metro Washington is a great place to live, work, raise a family, and retire,
but none of that is possible if workers can’t afford to live here,” said
Williams. Montgomery County residents can click here to urge the Council to act now.
