Striking MontCo Trash Haulers Launch Petition to Increase Pressure
Wednesday, October 23, 2013(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Despite
support
and encouragement for striking trash haulers from the Montgomery County
Council,
Maryland State Delegates and county residents, Potomac Disposal says “they
don’t have to compromise with us because they aren’t feeling any pressure
from
our strike,” reports striker Jacob Alvial. “So now, we need to show them
that
YOU, their customers, care how they treat their workers.” LiUNA! has launched
a
"Stop Treating Your Trash Collectors Like Trash" petition.
“The company offers unaffordable insurance, and long work hours can push
workers’ daily pay rate below the County’s living wage threshold when you
calculate it by the hour. These companies work for you, and are required to
staff customer service lines,” says the LiUNA’s Nicole Duarte, “Please
call
them and tell them that their employees deserve affordable health insurance and
fair wages.” Potomac Disposal: 301-294-9700; Unity Disposal and Recycling:
301-490-8604 or 301-990-2049. “Collecting trash is dangerous and demanding
work,” says striker Jacob Alvial, “and my co-workers and I want the
resources
we need to take care of ourselves and our families.” photo
