MontCo Political Leaders Urge (Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The Montgomery County Council is urging Potomac Disposal and Unity Disposal and Recycling to reach an agreement with striking trash haulers. All nine Councilmembers signed letters late last week saying that they have received calls from residents concerned that the two companies are “not living up to (their) obligations as corporate citizen(s) of Montgomery County. Like our residents,” the letter continues, “we value our trash collectors and want to see them treated fairly.” They have also requested that the County's Department of General Services look into any potential contract violations. “A preliminary report suggests there were violations of this law,” said Council member George Leventhal. County Executive Ike Leggett also met last week with the management of both companies, as well as with representatives of the Laborers’ union, urging a timely and fair resolution. photo courtesy MALIUNA
