Cleaners Battle Wage Theft at GW(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)This past summer, Julia Hidalgo worked overtime cleaning dormitories at George Washington University after students left for the summer. She was looking forward to the extra money to pay for child care for her 15-month-old daughter. But when it came time to be paid, BRAVO! Building Services fired Julia and her co-workers without paying them. The workers will be delivering a petition this afternoon to BRAVO! and GWU; click here to add your name. “I was devastated and worried about how I was going to pay my bills on time,” Hidalgo says. “For six weeks, we repeatedly showed up asking for our paychecks, but BRAVO! refused. Left with no other options, we took our story public. It was only after we joined with the Employment Justice Center here in D.C. and held a public demonstration on George Washington University's campus that the company finally agreed to pay us for hours worked.” BRAVO! still owes Hidalgo and her co-workers thousands in back pay and damages. “We're protesting because we can't afford not to,” Hidalgo says, “we need the money we're owed.”
