Students Encouraged to "Respect Your Ride"

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Students Encouraged to (Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Anacostia High School students got a first-hand look last week at the impact of throwing a rock at a bus. When Metro held a Respect Your Ride assembly at Anacostia High School on October 1, the school wide assembly not only heard about the criminal consequences, but participated in an interactive session as local radio host Angie Ange led a group of student volunteers to act out an assault and rock throwing incident. After each skit, bus operator Todd Muse discussed the negative impact the behavior has on property, the community, and bus operators. He reminded the students that each rock thrown takes a bus out of service and out of their community. He spoke candidly to the students about operators not wanting to drive the buses that pick them up because of their reputation as disorderly riders and the Metro representatives and Ange encouraging the students not to perpetuate the stereotype. Anacostia Principal Roberts suggested Metro return mid-year to reinforce the message. report/photo courtesy ATU 689
