Super Shuttle Drivers Organize With UFCW 1994(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Drivers from the Super Shuttle at BWI and National Airports filed for union recognition at the National Labor Relations Board earlier this month. The drivers, mostly African immigrants, are "exceptionally organized," said Amy Millar, coordinator of growth and strategic planning for Local 1994. "They have very little control over their jobs," Millar said, "and they are tired of being victimized by their employer." Drivers must buy their vehicles from the company, pay fees on every fare, and pay for their own gas and tolls. The company claims the employees are "independent contractors" but an August ruling by the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation declared the drivers were employees. photo courtesy UFCW 1994
