Federal Unions Working to Avert "Disastrous" Shutdown

Friday, September 20, 2013

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Unthinkable but entirely possible. That’s what AFGE President J. David Cox, Sr. calls the looming government shutdown, which could happen as soon as October 1. “Over a dozen Senators and eighty Representatives are pushing for a scenario that should be unthinkable,” Cox warned yesterday. “They want to use a government shutdown as leverage to enact an extreme, right-wing agenda that includes continuing the Sequester for the next nine years. And these folks are picking up more support every day.” A government shutdown would be disastrous, Cox warned. “And continuing the Sequester is just plain wrong for America,” with federal worker jobs and the strength of the economic recovery on the line. “Government’s ability to make people’s lives better is in jeopardy,” said Cox. He urged activists to send a message to Congress “to confront our problems responsibly.” AFSCME Council 26 is also asking its members to send a similar message to Congress, according to Executive Director Carl Goldman. photo courtesy CNN Money
