A surprise appearance by newly-elected AFL-CIO
Executive
Vice-President Tefere Gebre (left)
highlighted Monday’s Metro Washington Council meetings. Gebre – who
previously headed up the Orange County (CA) Labor Council – told the
Executive
Board members that “everything happens here on the ground where you are”
and
pledged that “I will be a strong voice for labor councils as we work to
rebuild
our labor movement from the ground up” before mingling with Council
delegates.
Metro Council President Jos Williams (right)
and his fellow Executive Board members welcomed Gebre warmly,
citing Gebre’s roots as an immigrant and CLC leader as evidence of the
Federation’s strong commitment to immigrant rights and central labor councils.
