LRAA Supporters Call for Override of Gray's Veto
Thursday, September 12, 2013(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Supporters of the Large Retailer Accountability Act (LRAA) reacted to
yesterday's veto by DC Mayor Vincent Gray with disappointment, anger and a call
for City Council to override the veto. “I am incredibly upset, disappointed,
and angry that Mayor Gray has decided to stand with Walmart and other large
corporations instead of with the residents of this city," said Kimberly
Mitchell, a Macy’s employee and lifelong Ward 7 resident. "The Mayor’s
decision is hardly surprising," added Reverend Graylan Hagler, of Plymouth
United Congregational Church of Christ and Faith Strategies. "This is exactly
what Walmart’s lobbyists said would happen. The Mayor’s office and
Walmart have been working together to defeat this bill from the start.” Metro
Council President Jos Williams, attending the AFL-CIO Convention in Los Angeles,
said that "the American labor movement just recommitted to winning fair wages
and economic justice for all American workers" and called on the DC City Council
to "stand up for DC workers and override this veto." Respect DC noted that
Gray’s veto came just two days after the Fair Political Practices Commission
in California announced that it would be investigating whether Sacramento Mayor
Kevin Johnson had a conflict of interest in a vote on a big box bill due to
charitable donations he solicited from Walmart and the Walton Foundation. LRAA
supporters are now targeting Council member Tommy Wells to provide the 9th vote
for an override: click here to email Wells.
