Elizabeth Davis Takes Helm at Washington Teachers
Friday, August 2, 2013(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Thanking Washington
Teachers Union Local 6 members for their
support, newly
sworn-in President Elizabeth Davis (at right in photo) reminded
those
attending the ceremony that “the challenges
facing DC’s teachers will require
the hard work and support of everyone,”
pledging that the local’s new
leadership “intends to fulfill all promises
and make life better for each
member.” AFT Secretary-Treasurer
Loretta Johnson, recognizing the
pre-eminence of the local in numbers and
leadership, congratulated the
newly-elected leaders and wished them
“strength, integrity and solidarity” in
waging the battles currently underway in DC
public schools. Community
Services Agency Executive Director Kathleen
McKirchy delivered a letter from
Metro Council President Jos Williams, who
normally swears in new officers of
Local 6 but was out of town. The Metro Council
“views WTU Local 6 as a leader
in the local labor movement,” Williams’
letter said, “and we look forward to
working with your new leadership in these
coming months on the serious issues
affecting teachers, and other union members and
workers in our city.”
