District Coalition for Better Transit Kick-Off(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Facing the possible privatization of DC's metro buses, local transit union ATU 689 and transit advocates and riders are teaming up to create the District Coalition for Better Transit. The coalition is kicking off this Wednesday with a community forum on privatization. Featuring transit workers and community leaders, activists will discuss the risks of private companies running bus lines currently operated by Metrobus in DC. With a goal of keeping public transit affordable, reliable, safe, and publicly accountable, the coalition plans to build from the forum, fighting for the interests of riders and transit workers. - photo: ATU members and allies pack the hall outside the Streetcar Government and Finance Task Force meeting in DC; photo courtesy ATU 689
