Monday, June 24, 2013
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)David Street has been appointed to the newly created position of Community
Organizer for the Washington Teachers’ Union. Street (right) will be
responsible for building relationships and collaborative activities with a
diverse group of organizations throughout Washington. “The Community Organizer
position is critical to WTU’s future as we create partnerships that enhance
our work to benefit DC teachers,” said WTU President Nathan Saunders, who
appointed Street. “Mr. Street will cultivate and strengthen
relationships with a wide range of DC leaders and groups as WTU continues to
work at building the best public education system for our students.” Street
will begin his Community Organizer role by strengthening relationships with
existing partners such as Jobs for Justice, UNCF, Empower DC and several
faith-based groups, as well as scheduling small group “chats” with other
potential WTU stakeholders to build collaborative initiatives. “WTU would like
to open new lines of communication with others around ideas of common
interest,” says Saunders. “When we can share information between WTU members
and community leaders, we can accomplish so much more.” David Street can be
