Labor Photo: Bikeshare Workers Deliver
Thursday, June 20, 2013(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Capital Bikeshare
employees delivered a petition yesterday to the District Department of
Transportation in hopes of recovering missing wages. The delegation included
former driver and supervisor Anibal Apunte
(at right), who spoke out at Monday’s Metro Council meeting about
the plight of the bikeshare company’s workers. Capital Bikeshare’s staff is
employed by Alta Bicycle Share, a Portland, Ore.-based company that manages
bike sharing systems around the United States. The contract between DDOT and
Alta, first signed in 2010 and renewed in 2012, stipulates that employees be
paid federal prevailing wages, but several current and former Bikeshare
employees filed a complaint earlier this year with the Labor Department, which
has launched an inquiry. - includes reporting by DCist; photo by Benjamin R. Freed
