Prince George's Taxicab Drivers Rally at Gaylord Hotel to Demand Local Jobs(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Prince George’s County taxicab drivers last week continued their fight for the right to pick up customers at Gaylord National Hotel and Resort at National Harbor, as 70 drivers picketed the hotel on Friday. “Today is a sad day for Prince George’s taxicab drivers, local cab companies and Gaylord customers,” said driver Amanuel Gebrewold. “More Veolia cars will replace local taxicabs,” forcing local taxi drivers to compete for less business in an already crowded market. Veolia is a French multinational Gaylord has granted prime space at the hotel. "The men and women who live and drive cabs in our county demand an opportunity to give equal service, have equal access and receive equal pay for their work,” said John Lally, an attorney who represents local cab companies with over 500 Prince George’s cabs. “The guests at Gaylord deserve no less." “Taxi drivers have to stick together,” added Ron Blount, Vice President of the National Taxi Workers Alliance, AFL-CIO. “This fight is about protecting local communities and the people who live and work in those communities.  National Harbor was built to benefit Maryland citizens and their guests, not for multinational companies like Marriott.” Marriott owns Gaylord. - photo by Mateos Chekol
