Large Retailer Accountability Bill Moves Forward

Monday, June 3, 2013

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

The Large Retailer Accountability Act took a big step forward last Friday when the DC City Council’s Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs Committee voted to move the bill out of committee. Rev. Dr. Edwin Jones of Forward 7 called the vote “a victory for the citizens of the District of Columbia” and  Tony Perez, a Metro Washington Council board member, agreed, saying This is a good first step in the right direction to create good sustaining jobs in the District of Columbia.” Community, faith and labor groups wearing yellow t-shirts and stickers saying “Pass the Large Retailer Act Now” packed the Committee’s hearing room on Friday. The Large Retailer Accountability Act of 2013 would require large retailers whose parent company grosses one billion dollars in the District to pay workers the living wage rate of $12.50 per hour.  The bill is expected to move to the full Council for a vote before the summer recess. - Alya Solomon
