Low-Wage DC Workers Strike

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Low-Wage DC Workers Strike(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Hundreds of low-wage workers from across DC walked out on strike today, calling for a living wage and benefits. The workers – all employed by federally-contracted companies – walked out of food-service and janitorial jobs in the first major action of the newly-formed Good Jobs Nation campaign (Federally Contracted Low-Wage Workers Launch "Good Jobs Nation" UC 5/9/2013). Labor and community allies were out in force, showing their support for the workers. At midday workers and allies pushed their way into Union Station – to the surprise of many commuters and tourists – where high-spirited chanting and singing accompanied speeches and banner drops. Local and national press have brought a spotlight to the issue (click here to check out Josh Eidelson’s report before and after the action for The Nation). Some allies will return to Union Station on Wednesday to walk workers back in and ensure that they are allowed to continue working; to join them, meet organizers in front of Union Station at 8am or contact goodjobsnation@gmail.com. - report/photos by Julia Kann
