No One Should Die for Fashion(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)In light of the recent deaths of workers at a clothing factory in Bangladesh, activists are calling on companies that source their items from such factories to sign a binding safety agreement "to prevent future tragedies like this one." On Wednesday members of United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) were joined by local labor and community activists at a picket of Children's Place in Columbia Heights. With signs reading "No One Should Die for Fashion" and "Children Against Sweatshops," picketers handed out fliers featuring a picture of children of workers killed in the Rana Plaza factory collapse. Sum of Us reports that companies including H&M, Zara, and Benetton have signed the binding Fire and Building Safety agreement. As USAS puts pressure on Children's Place, Sum of Us is mobilizing activists to pressure Gap to follow suit and the Respect DC coalition is calling out Walmart for also refusing to sign-on. - report/photos by Julia Kann
