The annual awards ceremony honors union activists, photographers and journalists of Local 32035. Other top winners included Mark Gail, The Washington Post (Grand Prize, Photography), Scott Calvert and Luke Broadwater, The Baltimore Sun (Grand Prize, Writing and the Morton Mintz Award for Investigative Reporting). Losak, a member of the WBNG since 2005, founded the nonprofit Renters Alliance in 2005 to fight for renters rights and security in the Washington metropolitan area. “It’s tough enough for workers who have seen year after year of stagnant wages, reduced benefits and ever increasing workloads without having to have their homes threatened by excessive rent increases and landlord intimidation, neglect and abuse,” Losak said. The Alliance now includes more than 3,000 members and 20 community groups including labor unions whose members need the Renters Alliance advocacy.
