DC COPE Report: Special Election Could Bring Budget Autonomy(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

DC voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a referendum supporting budget autonomy for the District. The vote on Referendum 8 – endorsed by the Metro Washington Council – for the first time allows the locally-elected DC government to pass a budget for the use of local tax dollars, and spend the money on its own schedule. "This is yet another indication that the people of DC are prepared to stand up and demand full political equality with other Americans -- including voting representation in Congress," said DC Vote Executive Director Kimberly Perry. Also on Tuesday, voters elected Anita Bonds to fill out the term for the at-large seat vacated by Phil Mendelson (D) when he became D.C. Council chairman last year. The Metro Council had made no endorsement in that race.
