Casino Workers Win(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Workers and community members at Saturday's Rally for Fair Development in downtown Baltimore had reason to be jubilant. United Workers and Unite Here Local 7 issued a joint statement early Saturday announcing that Caesars, which is developing the Horseshoe Casino in the heart of the city, will sign an agreement giving the 800 workers expected to be hired by the casino a process for unionizing. The agreement will be co-signed by three Baltimore local unions: Unite Here 7, Teamsters 355, and IUOE 37. "This agreement will be the first step toward ensuring that we will have good jobs in the casino for Baltimore residents,” said Unite Here 7 President Roxie Herbekian. This victory is a part of a larger "fair development" campaign led by local unions and community members, calling for development projects that benefit communities in need and provide living wage jobs for Baltimore residents. - report by Mariya Strauss; photos courtesy Unite Here 7 (above) and United Workers (left)
