Labor Art: Laborers' Flores a Finalist in Poster Contest
Thursday, April 18, 2013
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Local labor communicator Jaime Flores is one of
just five finalists in the 2013 National
American Latino Museum Poster
Contest. Deadline to vote is Thursday,
April 25 at 11:59pm PST. "The inspiration for
this graphic poster was from my earliest
memories as a child growing up in the
Caribbean,” says Flores, Director of
Strategic Communications for the
Mid-Atlantic Laborers. “When I think of
Latinidad and our community, I think of my
grandmother making cafe con leche and telling
me that this was the stuff that Latino dreams
are made of. In this work, I imagine the Latino
museum as a 'gran café' featuring a special
blend of all our cultural beauty for the world
to see. The wrestlers or 'luchadores' are out
of respect for a good friend of mine - famed
fronterizo artist Francisco Delgado - who often
depicts our gente as luchadores—warriors.
From the politician, to Dolores Huerta, to
Antonia Pantoja, to folks who work everyday in
various fields, as Latinos we are all
luchadores."
