Labor On The Move: Karen Newman to Direct 2013 Great Labor Arts Exchange
Monday, April 1, 2013
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The Labor Heritage Foundation has hired Karen
Newman as project director of the 2013 Great
Labor Arts Exchange. Newman attended her
first Arts Exchange in 2008, volunteered her
service on planning committees for the last
four years and last year was the driving force
behind the GLAE Film Festival. "Plans are
underway for an eventful and exciting GLAE June
28-30 at the Maritime Institute near BWI,”
says Newman. “Many long-time participants
recall that GLAE was the birthplace of the
American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Local
1000, the union for traveling musicians." With
this year's GLAE celebrating the twentieth
anniversary of Local 1000, "We are honored to
announce that Tret Fure, president of Local
1000, will host a plenary session on the
history and successes of the union since its
conception at the Arts Exchange," says Newman,
"and we hope her presence will inspire more of
her members to attend. As added incentive, I am
thrilled to announce this year's songwriting
contest."
