Labor Lobby Night in Annapolis Demonstrates Solidarity

Monday, March 25, 2013

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Solidarity and visibility are the keywords at the Maryland State and District of Columbia AFL-CIO Annual Lobbying Night in Annapolis tonight. The Maryland and DC Building and Construction Trades Council will be partners in putting on the event, Baltimore Central Labor Council President Ernie Grecco told Union City, signaling a level of cooperation that has not happened at previous Lobby Nights. "The whole purpose is to have unions supporting other unions," said Grecco. "And to be seen. Many of the unions have lobbyists, so the legislators see them but they don't see the rank and file. We encourage people to wear their union jackets and hats to have that presence." Grecco added that elected leaders from each of the unions present at the rally will take the microphone to speak about their members' legislative priorities. Staging and technical support will be provided by IATSE Local 19 members, making the event wall-to-wall union. - report by Mariya Strauss
