DC COPE Report: Metro Council Endorses Budget Autonomy Referendum

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)At its recent meeting, the Metro Council endorsed the Budget Autonomy Referendum, the sole measure on the ballot in the upcoming DC Special Election on April 23. The ballot initiative would allow the District government to spend locally-raised tax dollars without the approval of Congress. Even if voters approve it, however, Congress can act to veto it. "We may or may not get away with this, which makes it more fun” Council delegate Ann Hoffman (NWU/UAW) told fellow Council delegates last week, “But first we have to vote on it!” Council ally DC Vote is leading the charge, posting lawn signs all over the District and holding happy hours to raise funds for the campaign.
