1994 MCGEO Members Urge Baker to "Save the Library"
Monday, February 11, 2013(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Calling
on Prince
George’s County Executive Rushern Baker to “save the library,” over 30
members
of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO packed the room at last week’s Prince George’s
County
town hall. There has been talk of across-the-board cuts to all Prince
George’s
County departments and agencies, according to 1994 MCGEO President Gino Renne.
With over 200 members working in the Prince Georges County Memorial Library
System (PGCMLS), members are “worried further cuts will result in reduced
library hours, or even closing branches, which would have a big effect on the
community we serve” says Renne. Three union members testified at the Town
Hall,
calling on Baker to maintain the library budget and allow members to keep
serving the community. The local plans to turn out more members at this
Tuesday night's town hall as well, “to make sure their voices are
heard,”
says 1994 MCGEO’s Josh Ardison. Click here for a video report from NBC 4 on the possible
cuts facing the county. - report by Julia Kann; photos
