WTU Opens New Teachers' Center, Donates Books(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The Washington Teachers’ Union (WTU) dedicated its new Teachers’ Center last week at Anacostia High School in Washington, DC. The Center “will offer educators the professional development and instructional support they need to positively influence student outcomes,” said WTU president Nathan Saunders. With locations at Anacostia High School and Whittier Education Campus, the Teachers’ Center is focused on improving teacher quality in the District, as well as boosting teacher health and well-being through a fully-equipped fitness center and health and wellness classes at WTU’s new headquarters, where construction is expected to be complete in June 2013. To celebrate the dedication of the Center, WTU has partnered with First Book to bring thousands of new, free and deeply discounted books to DC Public School librarians, teachers and students. WTU has also donated more than 2,000 books and a dozen e-readers to low-performing public schools throughout the city. With the support of DC Chapter DAR volunteers, WTU’s Teachers’ Center will also facilitate reading groups at schools with low reading proficiency. - photo: (above) WTU Local 6 President Nathan Saunders (l) with “Dr Seuss”, aka WTU Field Service Representative Phillip Williams and (below) WTU book donations piled high; photos by Jasmine Berry
