Philly "Mayor 1%" Targeted at Noontime AFSCME Rally Today

Friday, January 18, 2013

Philly (Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)AFSCME is rallying at the Capitol Hilton today at noon to protest an appearance by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, who AFSCME has dubbed “Mayor 1%” for his support of the rich while slashing services and attacking city workers. Nutter “has shut library doors, reduced community health services, closed schools and fire stations,” says AFSCME, while “promoting an agenda that supports the 1% by giving them tax breaks.” City employees have gone four years without a contract while Nutter has spent over a million dollars to fight arbitration awards, AFSCME adds. “Like John Kasich and Scott Walker, he attempts to silence the voice of workers. Now he is in Washington to be honored by corporations such as Walmart!” Noting that Nutter “ran for office on a worker’s agenda,” AFSCME says that “time and time again, when the decision has to be made to do what is right, he sides with the 1%." - photo: At a Philadelphia firefighters protest earlier this month; photo by Kim Paynter/WHYY
