Transit Workers to Flyer Metro Saturday(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)As visitors and locals flock to the nation’s capital for Barack Obama's second Inauguration next Monday, ATU Local 689 members and allies will leaflet Metro travelers on the importance of public transit this Saturday and next Wednesday. ATU Local 689 is urging area union members and allies to join them "as we thank those who choose public transit and ask for their support in keeping our system for the people." Proposals to privatize sections of the DC metrobus system may threaten vital services to commuters, Local 689 warns. The fliering runs from 8a to 6p at seven metro stations (New Carrollton, L’Enfant Plaza, Fort Totten, Mt. Vernon Square, Clarendon, Dupont Circle, and Smithsonian). "Americans rely on public transit” says Local 689 President Jackie Jeter. “This is just the beginning of our fight against privatization of our nation’s transit system.” Stay tuned for more on the local campaign. - photo courtesy ATU International
