Federal Workers Facing "Perfect Storm"

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

Federal Workers Facing (Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Federal workers face a "perfect storm" in the next couple of months. The new Congress sworn in last Thursday may well be “particularly rough on federal agencies and their workers," wrote Washington Post columnist Joe Davidson on Friday. “In approximately two months Congress must reach agreement on the so-called fiscal cliff to avoid automatic cuts in agency budgets and decide whether to raise the debt ceiling,” notes AFSCME Council 26 Executive Director Carl Goldman. “Soon after, the current Continuing Resolution that is funding the government will end. Any one of these alone could cause hardship for federal employees, but we will soon be facing all three.” Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) is calling this “a trinity of worse, worse and worser” and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) warns that for everybody “who cares about a strong federal workforce, this is a time to be on maximum alert.” Adds Council 26’s Goldman, “We will be in touch with you in the near future with more information and to let you know what you can do to help." - photo: U.S. diplomats and federal workers rally against prospect of government shutdown in April, 2011; photo by Jacquelyn Martin/AP
