2013 Diners' Guide To Ethical Eating Released(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Eating out is great, but not when the people who serve us food can’t afford to pay the rent or take a day off when they’re sick. Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC) has just released their second annual 2013 ROC National Diners’ Guide as well as a free mobile app; both provide information on the wage, benefits, and promotion practices of the 150 most popular restaurants in America in 9 major cities across the country, from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. to New York City. “The workers who cook, prepare, and serve our food suffer from poverty wages, a lack of basic benefits like paid sick days, and often have little or no chance to move up to better positions,” says ROC. The Guide and app list responsible restaurants “where you can eat knowing that your server can afford to pay the rent and your cook isn’t working while sick.” App features include the ability to find nearby restaurants on a map, search and filter restaurants by criteria such as paid sick days, advancement opportunities, and living wage, plus, you can tweet at restaurants about their working conditions.
