Wednesday, November 28, 2012
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Members and staff of SAG-AFTRA’s Washington-Mid
Atlantic Local gathered together for the
first time in early November under the
newly-merged union of SAG-AFTRA. Members
“from every corner of the local” attended
the meeting in Rockville, the local reports,
including members from North Carolina,
Richmond, and Baltimore. Executive Director Pat
O’Donnell reviewed changes within the local
and around the country under the new union,
while members Tyrone Barksdale and Ellie Wang
reported on the union’s recent National Board
Meeting in Los Angeles. Associate Executive
Director Jane Love (at left in photo)
provided an update on productions in the
region, especially with the addition of North
Carolina. Later in November, Love discussed the
benefits of union membership with a crowd of
more than 80 actors, filmmakers and other film
industry professionals in Charlotte, North
Carolina, as well as with some 40 students in
the Business of Theatre class at Virginia
Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. “I
had no idea how much of a resource joining
SAG-AFTRA would be for me,” marveled student
Jessica Johns. “In a profession in which
there's so much uncertainty, I now feel that
there's an organization that can provide a
certain aspect of stability in my career.”
