MontCo Postal Workers Join Council(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Montgomery County Area Local 3630 of the American Postal Workers Union is the latest area union to affiliate with the Metro Washington Council. “Devoted to the interests of postal workers and an improved service,” the local represents approximately 2,500 postal workers in the VMF (Vehicle Maintenance Facility), along with the Clerks, Maintenance, and Motor Vehicle crafts throughout Montgomery County. The local, known as MCAL, is the result of the merger of APWU locals in Rockville, Gaithersburg and Silver Spring in 1985, and most recently merged with the Germantown local in July 2007. Nannette Johnson-Corley (at right) has served as president of the local since 2004. “My motto is ‘Each one teaches one’,” says Johnson-Corley. "The labor movement has much to share, especially with the younger workers who are not as familiar with the fights we’ve waged for future generations; it’s our duty to pass along these lessons of struggle with young and old alike.” “We’re excited to welcome our brothers and sisters at MCAL to the Labor Council’s ‘House of Labor’” said Metro Council President Jos Williams. “With so many attacks on public sector workers – and the special challenges facing our brothers and sisters at the Postal Service – we must come together in solidarity in the battle for dignity and respect at work.”
