AFL-CIO Pivots to Battle Tax and Program Cuts(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Pivoting quickly from Tuesday’s elections to the ongoing fight to protect working families’ future, the AFL-CIO is now focused on threats by the GOP to extend the Bush tax cuts for the richest 2% and cut programs Americans rely on. “It’s up to us to fight like hell for the working people in our communities,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, encouraging activists to sign a petition to “Tell Congress: Protect Our Future.” “We need to work to make sure the rich pay their fair share, there are no cuts to our benefits, and programs that safeguard our country’s future -- like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security -- are safe for generations to come.”
