St Mary's College Workers OK New Pact(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)An immediate $1,000 pay raise was the highlight of a new contract unanimously ratified Friday by 84 workers at St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM), represented by AFSCME Maryland Local 3980. In addition to the immediate raise, the SMCM employees will receive a 2% pay raise at the start of 2013 and expanded employee participation in Labor Management Committees. Not only did the win bring a strong contract, it also grew the local, which added 14 new members to its 105-person unit. The bargaining team – Bobby Clements, Cheryl Colson, Mike Colvin, Jen St. Germain, Juliet Hewitt, Kathy Lewin, Brad Newkirk, Ty Reynolds and Rob Webb; and alternates Jack Short and Leslie Tucker – led the local through smooth negotiations, reported Jeff Pittman of AFSCME Maryland, who said “we worked very well in partnership with management” to win the contract. – photo of bargaining team members (left to right) Jen St. Germain, Rob Webb, Kathy Lewin, Bobby Clements, Brad Newkirk Ty Reynolds & Mike Colvin; photo courtesy of AFSCME Maryland
