Bill Fletcher on "21 Myths about Unions"

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

Bill Fletcher on (Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)"It is far from uncommon to come across very intelligent people who have no idea what a union is,” Bill Fletcher Jr. says. “For those of us active in the labor movement this is frequently difficult to believe, but it is true. I flew next to a woman in her 30s who had absolutely no idea what a labor union was.  When I explained it to her she nodded her head but it was clear that she actually did not know what I was talking about.  So should it be any surprise that the political right uses that reality against us, painting labor unions as selfish, out of step with the times and narrow?  But here is the big question:  what are we--in organized labor--doing to demonstrate that labor unions are actually organizations that fight for economic justice for all workers?” Fletcher, Education Director for AFGE, will address this and “20 Other Myths about Unions” – the subtitle of his new book “They’re Bankrupting Us!” – at tonight’s "Bread & Roses" Labor Series book reading, signing, and discussion at Busboys & Poets (6p at the 5th Street B&P).
