Union Summer Students Learn to Make Change(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)With Labor Day around the corner, dozens of Union Summer students across the country are reflecting on a summer spent in the field building worker power. Five students spent the summer in DC at AFL-CIO headquarters, where they learned about organizing, research, and participated in local actions ("Mock Funeral & Double Demos Mark Year Without Contract at Verizon," UC 6/22/2012 & "Verizon Strike Anniversary Marked," UC 8/10/2012). The experiences of union summer students can be seen and heard in the AFL-CIO’s new video about the program. “Union Summer is really personal for me” said Addy Davidoff, a student who spent her summer in DC. Davidoff – whose father works at the AFT – “always saw [the labor movement] as the outlet for my voice.” Click here to learn more about Union Summer. - photo of Union Summer students at a Verizon picket in DC by Julia Kann
