Parents Say School Librarians Not Expendable(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)With hand-drawn signs reading “Have a Cookie, Save a Librarian” and “Show Good Taste, Support Our Librarians,” DC families gathered outside the Wilson Building last week to support school librarians. The group, called the Capitol Hill Public Schools Parents Organization (CHPSPO), was protesting against public school budget cuts that will leave 57 schools – and 16,000 public school students – without a librarian in the fall. “School librarians are not expendable!” said CHPSPO Founder Suzanne Wells. The group sold baked goods and gathered signatures for a petition demanding budgeting for librarians in every school.
