Metro Labor Applauds Council Members' Commitment to Table Woodson Nomination
Tuesday, July 10, 2012
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Following a day of intense lobbying by labor
and community activists, Metro Council
President Jos Williams released a letter
yesterday applauding the resulting commitment
by seven DC City Councilmembers -- Jack Evans,
Kenyan McDuffie, Tommy Wells, Yvette Alexander,
Michael Brown, Vincent Orange and Interim Chair
Phil Mendelson – to vote to table the
nomination of Roderic L. Woodson to the DC
Water Board of Directors at today’s Council
meeting. “Your vote is courageous,”
Williams said in his letter, noting that
“over the coming months and years the
Authority will award hundreds of millions of
dollars in contracts to upgrade and modernize
the city’s water and sewer system, and it’s
more important than ever for the Council to
avoid even the appearance of a possible
conflict of interest.” Williams called the
Councilmember’s commitment to vote to table
the Woodson nomination “the appropriate and
wise thing to do at this time, demonstrating
that this Council will go the extra mile to
insure the confidence of the public.”
