Bill Lucy Reflects on Fight for Public Sector Worker Rights(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Is the labor movement destined to repeat its own history? What’s the outlook for unions in 21st century America in general and specifically for the rights of public employees? Legendary labor leader William (Bill) Lucy (at right) – who’s been through tumultuous times before as leader of the fight to secure collective bargaining rights – reflects on “The Fight for Rights for Public Sector Workers” at DC Labor & Employment Relations Association’s luncheon tomorrow (click here to RSVP).  AFSCME’s Secretary-Treasurer for more than 30 years, Lucy helped the group grow from 200,000 to over 1.4 million members in 3,500 local unions nationwide and also helped define the role of African Americans in labor unions when he founded the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) in 1972. Along the way he has stood alongside the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in civil rights struggles and Nelson Mandela in opposition to apartheid.
