Council Supports USPS Hunger Strike, Demands Restoration of Labor Hall of Fame(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)A hunger strike and restoring the Labor Hall of Fame topped the actions taken Monday at the Metro Washington Council’s monthly meeting. The Metro Council’s Executive Board and delegates unanimously approved strongly-worded resolutions on the two issues, supporting next week’s hunger strike in DC by U.S. Postal Service workers and demanding restoration of the Labor Hall of Fame at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Due to the ongoing threats to the postal system, customers and workers, USPS workers and their supporters plan to launch the hunger strike next Monday and will rally at USPS headquarters on Thursday, June 28. The Metro Council also joined AFGE Council 1 in demanding that the DOL restore the Labor Hall of Fame. Established in 1988, DOL’s Labor Hall of Fame included historic artifacts like Cesar Chavez’ iconic plaid shirt, Lane Kirkland’s harmonica, and the purse Mother Jones gave to Maude Estep of West Virginia, whose husband was killed by company gunmen during the Paint and Cabin Creek Mine strike of 1912-13. Earlier this year it was renamed the “Hall of Honor” and the artifacts replaced with a list of names.
