Labor Steps Up for Shoebox Project(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)An SUV overflowing with shoeboxes left the Community Services Agency yesterday. The shoeboxes – filled with travel size shampoo, soap, lip balm, and more – were donations from local labor to the United Way Shoebox Project, which will distribute the boxes to the elderly, veterans and homeless people in need. “Labor donated 120 shoeboxes full of supplies, plus enough loose material for another 50 boxes” said CSA Directory Kathleen McKirchy, proudly eyeing the stacks of boxes. With the United Way bringing in a total of about 1000 shoebox donations, labor made up “an impressive 17% of the entire project.” Local labor contributors include ATU 689, IAM, CWA 2108, DCNA, IBEW 26 Retirees, Mart Pattison (TNG 35), Dan Duncan (NoVa AFL-CIO), Calvert County Democrats, Adam Wright, Fred Allen (GCC 538-C), Gwend Johnson (CBTU), Cement Masons 891, UFCW 400, and others. “Thanks so much to the many folks who stepped up to make donations!” said McKirchy. - photos of IAM donating items (above) and United Way’s Brandi Lester (right) picking up items from the CSA’s McKirchy (below); photos by Kathleen McKirchy and Chris Garlock, respectively
