(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

An online petition urging the DC City Council to pay back city workers “for the needless furlough days that we were forced to accept under the false pretense of a budget shortage” has already gathered over 600 signatures. “The sacrifice was made by the everyday working class people who make it possible for the Capital of this Nation to function,” says the petition, created by AFSCME Local 2401 Recording Secretary Roger Scott. With a budget surplus of $77 million projected for this fiscal year, the petition demands immediate full reimbursement for the furloughs, reimbursements for step increases owed from last year and raising the pay scale in the next fiscal year. “We are also considering planning an action for the DC Council meeting on 6/5,” when the Council plans a vote on the issue, Scott tells Union City, “and could use as much support as we can get."
