Supermarket Workers to Continue Activism(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Saying “We can’t stop; we won’t stop,” local supermarket workers aren’t relaxing after winning contracts at Giant and Safeway earlier this month. “The new agreements only cover the next 19 months so we have to continue our activism to secure an even better contract next Fall,” says UFCW Local 400, which represents some 17,000 area grocery workers. While the new contracts “are fair and include major improvements, we still have to continue pushing to secure even stronger language,” the local added. “We’re going to continue to build on all of the activism that we’ve done so far.” Local 400 plans to keep its Facebook page, blog, and Twitter accounts active through the duration of the new agreements, as well as launching new programs and expanding existing efforts, including educating stewards to handle workplace issues, enforcing the contract and handling grievances.  They’ll also be discussing and employing tactics “that will enable us to ensure that management on the shop floors is treating workers fairly.” Local 400 will also be working on organizing non-union grocery workers as well as continuing to “build the power and solidarity” to help Local 400 members at CVS, Kaiser Permanente, Shopper’s Food Warehouse, Macy’s and Kroger, whose contracts are up over the next 19 months. - photo courtesy of Local 400 ACT
