UFCW 1994 Wants Problem Busses Off Streets
Monday, April 9, 2012
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)“Quit playing Russian roulette with the
safety of our bus operators and the riding
public,” said UFCW Local 1994 President Gino
Renne after Local 1994 learned that the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
is investigating the safety of the Ride On Bus
Fleet in Montgomery County. Local 1994 has
filed a grievance demanding that Montgomery
County remove the problem buses from service
“until the defects are revealed and
corrected.” The County initially told Local
1994 that it was removing the buses from
service in the next 18 months, but has now
moved to a six-month deadline for replacing the
buses. “That’s not soon enough,” said bus
operator and Local 1994 leader Nelvin Ransome.
“We’ve seen six fires aboard these buses in
the past three years. The fleet is aging and
the possibilities are still too great we’ll
see more incidents in the next six months.”
Adding that “Our role is to protect our
members and the public from harm,” Ransome
pledged that “Until the buses are removed
from service, we won’t rest.”
