Injured Workers Organize in DC

Injured Workers Organize in DC(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)DC Government Workers injured on the job are not taking it lying down. The DC City Council cut protections for injured workers in the 2011 budget, but injured workers are fighting back against being pushed into poverty or losing their homes. They’ve organized themselves into a group called the “Injured Workers Advocates” and their allies at the Employment Justice Center and DC Jobs with Justice are working to make sure injured workers get the benefits they need. The Protecting Injured Workers Reform Act of 2012 – an act these groups hope to introduce in this budget cycle - would help ensure that workers get accurate assessments of their injuries, compensation for mental conditions suffered by workers as a result of their injuries, and many other necessary benefits. Community members are signing on to a petition to support the reform act; stay tuned to Union City for updates on the ongoing Injured Workers campaign. - report by Employment Justice Center’s Naomi Iser; photo of Injured Workers Advocates and EJC attorney courtesy of the Employment Justice Center
