Supermarket Workers Urge Shoppers to Take Action to Help Avert Strike
Wednesday, March 28, 2012
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)With the March 31 contract expiration just days
away, UFCW Local 400 called on area shoppers to
take action at their local Giant or Safeway to
help them win a fair contract and avert a
strike or lock-out of 25,000 area supermarket
workers. “We are calling on all customers and
allies to please fill the stores and let the
store manager know that you support us,” said
Local 400, which continued bargaining
yesterday. Click
here to take action at your local
supermarket. Local labor, community and
religious allies have already “done a great
job of helping us out” and Local 400 urges
supporters to “Please visit your store
manager and let them know that ‘Enough is
enough! Giant and Safeway workers deserve a
fair contract and if they have to go on strike
to secure that contract, I won’t shop in your
store!’” If you plan to do this, please click
here so that we can keep Local 400 posted.
“Don’t forget to let the workers know that
you support them too,” adds Local 400,
“especially if they are wearing a Local 400
button or lanyard.” - photo by Chris Garlock
