Grocery Workers Step Up Campaign for Fair Contract(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)With just a month to go before their contracts with Safeway and Giant expire, UFCW Local 400 members are expanding their campaign from the streets into the digital realm. Early in the campaign Local 400 sent mobile billboards throughout the metro area, spreading the word about their fight for a fair contract. “Our message is need versus greed,” said UFCW Local 400 President Tom McNutt.  "These companies are extremely profitable, and there is no excuse for concession demands.” The new online ads take Safeway to task for paying CEO Steve Burd $11 million, or more than 500 times the average employee wage. Not only do the ads highlight this huge inequality, they also urge local customers to make their support known to store managers.
