Progressive Maryland Launches Campaign for Tax Fairness

Progressive
Maryland (PM) this week launched a
statewide campaign for tax fairness with
a mailing to voters in selected election
districts across the state
highlighting the inequity in the current tax
system and many of the proposals
being considered by the General Assembly to
close an estimated $1.1 billion
budget shortfall. "A progressive state like
Maryland cannot continue to
permit Maryland millionaires to pay a
startlingly
lower
share of their income in state taxes nor can it
keep allowing large, profitable
multistate corporations to pay little or no
state income tax through loopholes
in the tax code," said PM President Elbridge
James. The campaign, which
enjoys significant union support, will continue
with social media, phone banks
and e-mail blasts to voters across the state
urging them to contact key
legislators on the issue. Canvassing voters
door-to-door and additional mailings to
voters are scheduled in the
districts of key legislators over the next
several weeks. "It is
unconscionable that the legislature is
considering cuts to education and public
safety when we have millionaires getting a tax
cut and huge, profitable
companies like Pepco and Verizon paying no
state income taxes last year,"
said Kate Planco Waybright, PM Interim
Director.
