Grocery Workers Take to Streets(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Giant and Safeway checkout clerks are taking to the streets for a new contract. Or at least, photos of the UFCW 400 members are. As UFCW Local 400 kicks off negotiations with Giant and Safeway, a fleet of mobile billboards is hitting area streets, featuring the faces of local grocery workers. Calling it “the most aggressive contract campaign in our history,” Local 400 is urging supporters to respond to the billboards by honking their horns to show solidarity with the members “who make sure you get fresh food and good service every day of the week.” The current contract expires March 31. Check out Local 400’s “Occupy Giant and Safeway” blog to read the full story and their website to stay up-to-date on negotiations. - photo courtesy of Local 400
